Can You Get Ulcers Eating Spicy Food?

    November 30, 2022 /

You cannot get ulcers from eating spicy food, although they can make ulcers worse. Although there is some risk of gastrointestinal issues being caused or worsened by spicy foods, they have also been shown to have many health benefits as well, such as increased longevity and even reducing cancer risk. What are Ulcers? Ulcers are sores that are either slow to heal or keep returning. They can be found on any place in the skin you can see, like a leg ulcer on the skin,  and in places you can’t see, such as a peptic ulcer in your stomach lining. For the purposes of this article, we will be discussing…

Can I Lose Weight on 100 Grams of Carbs a Day?

    November 27, 2022 /

It is possible to lose weight on 100 carbs a day, I personally have lost weight on roughly 100 carbs a day. Multiple diets, including the Atkins 100 diet, are based around the principle of consuming 100 carbs daily. What are Carbs? Carbohydrates, or carbs for short, are one of the macronutrients that our body needs in large amounts to survive. The other ones are protein, and fat. These are in contrast to micronutrients, vitamins and minerals, that we need only in small amounts. Carbs are sugars, starches, and fiber. Your body turns carbs into glucose, to give you the energy to function. The digestive system breaks down carbs into…

To stay under 50 grams of carbs a day, read nutritional labels for foods when you’re unsure of their carbohydrate content, things like store bought tomato or vegetable soup can contain a surprisingly high amount of carbs. Focus on eating foods like non starchy vegetables such as lettuce or mushrooms, eggs, meat, and cheese, which all have almost 0 grams of carbs. What are Carbs? Carbohydrates, or cabs as they are commonly known, are a type of macronutrient. The other types of macronutrients are protein, and fat. Do Anti-Anxiety Medications Cause Weight Gain?

    November 23, 2022 /

Classic anti-anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines show no association with weight gain. However, antidepressants, which are often prescribed as a first line treatment for anxiety, can lead to a high level of weight gain.  First of all, I am not a doctor. I am just somebody who has taken different types of psychiatric medications, and struggled with weight gain from some of them. Anti-anxiety meds are a type of psychiatric, or psychotropic, medication. They regulate the brain chemicals that regulate emotions and thought patterns. There are five main types of psychiatric medications, of which anti-anxiety medications are one type. The other types are antipsychotics, stimulants, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers. Many…

How Many Carbs do you Burn Walking?

    November 21, 2022 /

If a 150 pound person goes walking at a moderate pace of 3 miles per hour, after an hour they would burn 224 calories total, or roughly 112 calories from carbs. This is assuming that at a moderate walking base the body burns 50% fat, and 50% protein. What are Carbs? Carbohydrates (carbs) are a type of macronutrient. The other two macronutrients are fat and protein. Your body needs macronutrients in large amounts to function, compared to micronutrients, vitamins and minerals you need in very small amounts. Carbs are starches, sugars, and fibers. They are found in things like grains, milk, and fruits. Your body turns carbs into glucose, to…

How Can I Stay Full Without Bread?

    November 19, 2022 /

To stay full without bread, you can eat more eggs, meat, avocado, nuts, or legumes, or drink more water or tea. Is Bread Filling? Eating bread is actually not incredibly filling compared to a lot of foods. When I eat just toast for breakfast, or other similar carby things like pancakes or cereal for breakfast, I notice that I actually get hungry again pretty quickly. There are some types of bread with better nutritional value, that are more filling, but the most commonly consumed type of bread is white bread. There are few nutrients. Bread lacks both fiber and protein, two nutrients which can really help you to stay full…

What is the Most Filling Food You Can Eat on a Low Carb Diet?

    November 15, 2022 /

Some of the most filling foods you can eat on a low carb diet are eggs, legumes, and nuts. What are Carbohydrates? Carbohydrates (carbs) are a type of macronutrient. Your body turns them into glucose to give you the energy to function. Are there any foods with 0 carbs?

    November 13, 2022 /

The only foods that literally have 0 carbs are fats and oils such as olive oil. However, many other foods have a low enough amount of carbs, less than 1 gram per serving, that they are considered to be low carb. Some of these include meats, certain leafy vegetables, eggs, and some condiments. What are Carbs? Carbohydrates (carbs) are a type of macronutrient. Macronutrients are the nutrients that we need in larger quantities that provide us with energy. The other types of macronutrients are fat and protein. Does Fruit Juice Cause Gout?

    November 9, 2022 /

Fruit juice doesn’t “cause” gout, but many epidemiological studies have shown that it increases the risk of gout. One study showed that people who consume 2 glasses of fruit juice a day were 81% more likely to get gout compared with people who drank no fruit juice on average. What is Gout? Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is quite common. It usually affects one joint, such as the big toe especially. However, it can affect other joints too, such as the ankles or knees. Sometimes the symptoms flare and get worse, and sometimes they get better. A flare can start suddenly and last for days or weeks.…

How Can I Not Gain Weight on Psych Meds?

    November 6, 2022 /

To not gain weight on psychiatric medications, first of all, talk to your doctor about changing your medication if it is causing rapid weight gain to one that does not cause weight gain for you, or a more manageable level of weight gain. If your medication is causing milder weight gain, consider trying Metformin, especially if you are on antipsychotics. And, as is always good advice, consider eating healthier, and moving more. What are Psychiatric Medications? I’m not a medical doctor, but having struggled with mental health and taking many drugs over the years, these are things that I have learned about through personal experience. Psychiatric medications are medications that…

Bio

Hi, my name is Max! I've wanted to lose a bit of weight, so I started this blog with the idea to experiment with a bunch of different diets and see how they work for me, so I can share my findings with you. Because I have a masters degree in epidemiology/public health, I am also interested in nutritional epidemiology, and plan on exploring that a bit.
